GTA VI ‘Extended Look’ Will Hit Netflix First at the End of August

As the release of Grand Theft Auto VI approaches, the hype continues to build—and it just stepped up a level with the announcement of a new “extended look” at the game, which will premiere on August 27. It’s been over a year since the last trailer for the game appeared, so it’s safe to say that this new one—and look, we’re going to call it a trailer, for the sake of convenience if nothing else—will be sending Netflix’s servers into meltdown.

Wait, whose servers? Yep: Rockstar’s announcement proclaims that the trailer is premiering on Netflix. This is technically true, but it’s also worth noting that the exclusivity lasts for a whole six (6) hours before the trailer appears elsewhere: Netflix subscribers can watch it at 3pm ET, while everyone else will have to wait until 9pm ET.

(The times are provided in US parlance, but curiously enough the six-hour will probably prove more relevant to the rest of the world: the westernmost countries of Europe are six hours ahead of the US East Coast, making this the difference between being able to watch the trailer at a sensible hour of the evening or staying up past midnight, while in much of Asia and Oceania it’ll be the difference between watching over breakfast or waiting a couple of hours longer.)

The most notable thing about this announcement—apart from getting another look at the game—is Netflix’s involvement: previous trailers have appeared where you’d expect, i.e. Rockstar’s YouTube channel. YouTube and Netflix are the world’s pre-eminent video streaming platforms, and in some ways, they represent fundamentally different paradigms: you could argue that if YouTube’s entire business originated with the incursion of the internet into TV, Netflix’s idea was to reclaim the internet for TV and film.

Of course, in 2026 those lines are pretty blurry. Netflix execs’ days of throwing immense sums of money at original prestige content seem to be behind them, and their latest attempt to shore up their business has involved… signing up YouTubers. YouTube, meanwhile, has become one of many streaming platforms offering TV shows and films.

There’s one thing that Netflix isn’t, though, and it’s a place you scan constantly for new content: things like sports highlights, news and, well, video game trailers. If you asked a million people where they’d go and look for a video game trailer, it feels like a safe bet that not one would say “Netflix”, because, well, why would they? The fact that Netflix feels it’s worth giving Rockstar what is presumably a lot of money for six hours’ worth of exclusivity on this trailer suggests that they want to at least plant the seed in people’s minds that Netflix is a place where you can find such things.

Will anyone care? Of course, no one can say for sure, but to use a gaming analogy, this feels like one of those situations where a new release game isn’t on Steam because it’s an Epic exclusive, or something—unless you’re a super fan of Darkest Dungeon or Alan Wake, you just kind of shrug your shoulders and think to yourself, well, I’ll get it in a few months. Or, in this case, a few hours.
