Released by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2020, the game Ghost of Tsushima took players on an extraordinary quest through the samurai world. Soon, those who aren’t game enthusiasts can also go on this journey. As Sony revealed at the 2025 CES press conference in Las Vegas, the anime series based on the best-selling game is currently in the works for the Crunchyroll platform.
The news came as a surprise as a live-action film based on the hit game was announced some time ago. The project, proclaimed in 2021, was turned over to Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick film series. In November 2023, the director announced that work on the script was finished. The project hasn’t been scratched, so the live-action movie and anime series will likely be developed simultaneously.
Crunchyroll, owned by Sony, is a streaming service every anime fan should visit – as the platform offers more than 1,000 Japanese animated shows. If you want to learn more about it, check out our article on using the service for free.

The multi-player mode titled Ghost of Tsushima: Legends was released also in 2020. Unlike the single-player version, the game is based on Japanese mythology and features supernatural creatures and alternate worlds. It consists of nine missions that retell the story from the main game, combining the Mongol invasion and the fight with the malicious demons. The player can choose a character from four available classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin.
Ghost of Tsushima games allow users to explore the large open world while engaging in combats and side quests. During the standoffs, the player can use multiple types of weapons, including a katana, bow and blowgun, as well as firecrackers and smoke bombs to distract the enemies.
