George Lowe, a comedian and voice actor best known for his role as Space Ghost in the Adult Swim animated talk show series Space Ghost Coast to Coast, has died at 67.
News of Lowe’s passing was first announced on Facebook by Lowe’s longtime friend “Marvelous” Marvin Boon. TVLine later confirmed Lowe’s passing. According to TVLine, Lowe passed away March 2, reportedly after battling a long illness.
“I’m beyond devastated,” Boon wrote. “My Zobanian brother and best friend for over 40 years, George Lowe, has passed away after a long illness. A part of me [has] also died. He was a supremely talented artist and voice actor. A true warm-hearted genius. Funniest man on Earth too. I’ve stolen jokes from him for decades. He stole some of mine.”
As noted by TVLine in a 2023 article, fans grew concerned over Lowe’s health after the actor stopped posting as frequently on social media. According to TVLine, Lowe was suffering from health problems, including an aortic dissection that required intubation twice, leading Lowe to require a nurse to care for him at his Florida residence.
Space Ghost was originally a crime-fighting superhero created by Hanna-Barbera on Cartoon Planet. He later transitioned to the comedic late-night talk show host fans know and love him as today. Space Ghost Coast to Coast was ahead of its time, having its titular host sit down and chat with real-world celebrities like Willie Nelson, Talking Heads’ David Bryne, and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
