‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Sinners’ Get Screen Actors Guild Awards Love—’Andor,’ Not So Much

If you paid any attention to io9’s year-end coverage, you know how much we loved season two of Andor. Every aspect of the Star Wars Disney+ show was fantastic—the writing, the directing, the costumes, even the music—but the performances were particularly above and beyond. However, you won’t get any validation on that front from the Screen Actors Guild, apparently; today’s nominees for the Actor Awards, the new name for the SAG Awards, included just one nod for Andor: Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.

That’s the only Actor Award category Andor has ever been nominated for, actually. The first time around, in 2023, it lost to Stranger Things; this year, it’s up against Landman, The Last of Us, Squid Game, and… Stranger Things.

However, you can’t point fingers at SAG-AFTRA and call its members genre haters, even though Diego Luna (at the very least) was clearly robbed. Other projects in the sci-fi and horror spheres did get recognition, including several nominations for Sinners and Frankenstein.

Sinners notched nods for Michael B. Jordan’s lead actor performance (he’s the only nominee across all the categories to be nominated for two roles in one film), Miles Caton’s supporting actor performance, and Wumni Mosaku’s supporting actress performance. Sinners‘ entire ensemble was also nominated for outstanding cast performance, as was its stunt team in the motion picture category.

Frankenstein was also nominated for its acting and stunt ensembles. Jacob Elordi was singled out for his supporting performance as the Creature.

Elsewhere, Bugonia picked up a few nods (Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone for their leading performances). The supporting actress category also features Ariana Grande (Wicked: For Good) and Amy Madigan (Weapons).

On the TV side, in lieu of any Andor love, the genre nominees include Sterling K. Brown (actor in a drama for Paradise); Britt Lower (Severance) and Rhea Seehorn (Pluribus) in the drama actress category; Jenna Ortega (comedy actress for Wednesday); and the ensemble of Severance.

You can stream the Actor Awards (check out all the nominees here) March 1 on Netflix.

For those keeping track of this year’s big Hollywood ceremonies, the Golden Globes are coming up January 11 (there’s some nominee overlap, as well as more Andor snubs; read about that here); you can stream them on Paramount+. The Academy Awards, meanwhile, will announce nominees January 22 and hand out Oscars March 15, with a telecast on ABC.
