The Criterion Collection is more than a great company that puts out staggeringly awesome physical media releases that celebrities talk about in a closet. It’s also a company that’s working to help fans take important streaming movies off their laptops and into their hands. The next two films to earn that distinction? Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Netflix’s biggest movie ever, KPop Demon Hunters.
Both of the films were released by Netflix, which one might assume means the company wants to keep them on the platform. However, over the years, several high-profile films have made it from the streamer to Criterion, such as Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, and Pinocchio, also by Guillermo del Toro. So there’s certainly some precedent here, especially for del Toro, who loves physical media, has been teasing a Frankenstein release, and is a regular visitor to the Criterion Closet.
Variety broke the news of the releases, but a spokesperson for Criterion told io9 there is “nothing else to share at this time” regarding the discs. It seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the release dates or details on the special features.
In the meantime, fans can begin to dream about what deleted materials, behind-the-scenes footage, and commentaries they’d love to dig into for these two films. And while we expect those selections to be well-curated and plentiful on the Frankenstein disc, we are most curious about the KPop release. That’s a film with such a fascinating past, such an unexpected ride towards mainstream popularity, and a story that is still being written thanks to awards season and franchise consideration. How much did the filmmakers document? How deep will the rabbit hole go? We’re sure to find out soon.
Again, no word on a release date as of press time, but Criterion has already announced releases through May. If these are coming this year, it won’t be before the summer.
