American Horror Story: 13 arrives on FX next week. Since the latest season of the Ryan Murphy horror anthology is going to be a crossover of several previous installments, AHS itself has very kindly suggested 13 essential episodes for fans to revisit.
According to a post on the American Horror Story Threads account, the lucky 13 (technically, 14 with that two-parter) are as follows.
• 1×01: “Pilot”
• 1×09: “Spooky Little Girl”
• 1×12: “Afterbirth”
• 3×01: “Bitchcraft”
• 3×12: “Go To Hell”
• 3×13: “The Seven Wonders”
• 4×03/4×04: “Edward Mordrake (Part 1 + 2)
• 5×04: “Devil’s Night”
• 7×10: “Charles (Manson) In Charge”
• 8×01: “The End”
• 8×06: “Return to Murder House”
• 8×09: “Fire and Reign”
• 8×10: “Apocalypse Then”
The list includes key episodes from season one (Murder House), three (Coven), four (Freak Show), five (Hotel), seven (Cult), and especially eight (Apocalypse, which featured a crossover between Murder House, Coven, and Hotel). Sorry, Asylum and Roanoke fans, as well as anyone who’s been hanging in there with seasons nine through 12; maybe Murphy will toss in some Easter eggs for you anyway.
If you live in Los Angeles, you can also check out an immersive experience on September 18 and 19 that will “bring every installment of American Horror Story to life with an immersive experience that leads guests on a terrifying journey of chain reactions, interactive puzzles, and jump scares inspired by the anthology’s most memorable moments,” according to a press release. It will then end “face-to-face with the new horrors of the 13th installment.”

American Horror Story: 13 stars (deep breath) Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Joey Pollari, and Jessica Lange. The supporting cast includes Avantika, Jamie Brewer, Elle Chapman, Berto Colon, Alex Consani, Frances Conroy, Mat Fraser, Seth Gabel, Orlando Jones, Paul Anthony Kelly, John Carroll Lynch, Tig Notaro, Madelaine Petsch, Fedor Steer, Mena Suvari, Zach Villa, John Waters, and more.
The season, which features 13 half-hour episodes, kicks off September 24 on FX and Hulu and on Disney+ internationally. The first two weeks will each be a three-episode drop, with the rest of the season dropping two episodes each week through October 29.
