Elizabeth Holmes, the tech founder who was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison back in 2022 for defrauding investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars with her startup Theranos, is getting moved to a halfway house next summer, according to the New York Times.
The Times cites an FBI letter sent to Holmes’ victims, saying that Holmes will be moved from her current facility, a minimum-security federal prison camp for women outside of Houston, Texas, to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, on August 23.
Holmes was 19 when she founded the biotechnology startup Theranos in 2003. The startup promoted an idealistic premise that could potentially revolutionize healthcare: With just a small prick and a couple of drops of blood, Theranos’ machine could allegedly run a wide range of blood tests. She raised hundreds of millions of dollars from high-profile investors, which included media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, and the startup formed partnerships with major companies like Walgreens and medical centers like the Cleveland Clinic. Her soaring fame came crashing down when a Wall Street Journal report unveiled that the company had lied to investors and customers, prompting the long legal saga that ultimately got her sent to prison in May 2023.
Since then, Holmes got her prison sentence shortened and has reportedly been begging the Trump administration for a commutation. She has also been embraced online by MAHA influencers, some of whom claim that she was unfairly criticized. The RFK Jr.-led MAHA community seems to think that Holmes was targeted not because of the fraud she led but because she allegedly threatened the power of “a trillion-dollar industry controlled by conglomerates, with masked Pfizer interests looming,” per MAHA influencer Jessica Reed Kraus.
According to the letter, Holmes’ release date is currently February 22, 2030, which is roughly two years after she gets transferred to the halfway house. Prisoners at halfway houses tend to stay there for a much shorter time than that.
The news dropped mere hours after A24 released the first full-length trailer for You Can See Everything, comedian Nathan Fielder’s documentary that follows Holmes over the thirty-four days leading up to her prison sentence. The movie, co-directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, debuts in theaters on October 16. In the newly released trailer, Fielder asks Holmes if she believes she did anything wrong.
“I did not,” Holmes says in the scene, shot presumably in April 2023. She adds that she does not understand how she got to where she is now.
“I wish I knew,” Holmes says.
