There’s a movie trailer going viral and racking up a billion views in rapid fashion, like Spider Man: Brand New Day. And then there’s a movie trailer going viral for something fans can’t stop cracking up about, like Moana. The detail in question in what otherwise looks like a faithful live-action rendering of the animated Disney fantasy is, of course, Dwayne Johnson’s Maui wig. But for all the fuss, the studio has no plan to alter the beachy waves in question.
There’s a precedent for a trailer causing such an uproar that the powers that be blink and make changes; we all remember the kerfluffle around Sonic the Hedgehog‘s original character design. After some careful recalibrating, “Ugly Sonic” faded into the past, and the successful film franchise is ramping up for its fourth installment.
While Maui’s flowing locks might not quite be as bad as our collective Sonic nightmare, they still aren’t great. Even distinctively coiffed comedian “Weird Al” Yankovic made a crack about it on his social media, posting a pic of Johnson’s character and writing, “We’ve told all the casting agents that the Weird Al biopic sequel is currently on hold, but they just keep sending in headshots.”
However, according to Variety, Disney has no plans for a digital makeover ahead of Moana‘s July 10 release date.
“Moana isn’t picture-locked, which means the coloring and visual effects are not yet complete, but sources say there are no plans to make a major creative pivot despite the social media pile-on,” the trade wrote, while noting Disney had no comment on the trailer.
