Maika Monroe says They Follow will go to some very dark places. The Mummy 4 wants to push the limits of PG-13. Plus, the mystery cast of the live-action Gundam movie continues to expand. Spoilers now!

Gundam

Deadline reports Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool) has joined the cast of Netflix’s live-action Gundam movie in a currently undisclosed role.

Synergy Systems

Deadline additionally reports Eric André is attached to star in Synergy Systems, a “punk, action-charged, near-future thriller” from The Greasy Strangler director, Toby Harvard. The story concerns the “terminally indecisive data analyst Bemis (André) as he uncovers that his employer, Synergy Systems, is a front for an apocalyptic doomsday plot. He’s then forced to do the unthinkable: step up as humanity’s last line of defense. The catch? He’s spineless, spectacularly unqualified, and wildly unprepared to save the world.”

13 Going On 30

Deadline also has word Emily Bader and Logan Lerman are attached to star in a remake of 13 Going On 30 at Netflix.

They Follow

Appearing as a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Maika Monroe confirmed the sequel to It Follows is her next project and that the script is “very dark.”

We’re doing it! That’s the next job. It’s very dark. We’re pushing the boundaries on this one for sure. Even reading the script, you get the same sense of the nostalgia, the slow camera movements, everything.

Jennifer’s Body 2

Appearing as a guest on the Boo Crew podcast (via Bloody-Disgusting), Diablo Cody stated the script for Jennifer’s Body 2 is “a response” to the latent popularity of the first movie.

You know what? It actually is not a typical sequel process, where you’re going ‘here’s what we’re going to protect from the first movie.’ It’s more like all the ways in which I was restrained on the first movie, I’m now unleashed. So it actually is less a feeling of being cautious and more of a feeling of being careless in the best way.

Obviously Jennifer’s Body is very important to me. I love it but I actually feel like the culture has caught up with what we were trying to do with that movie. Now it’s like I can really stretch my legs. I really loved writing this script. There was not a moment of it that felt like work, which is unusual for me these days.

Thematically, the whole movie is a response to that rediscovery [of the first film]. Truly, it was an unusual situation where the fans were able to inspire me back. The whole movie is infused with that love and appreciation and discovery. Every movie is about something, other than what it’s about, but this one is not just about Jennifer and Needy, it’s about me. It was really, really cathartic to write. I felt a lot of gratitude in the writing process, because it wouldn’t be happening if people hadn’t shown so much love for the first movie.

I cannot even think of a scenario, and we’ve tried, where a movie flopped critically and commercially and then got a sequel.

Avengers: Doomsday

During his recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (via Deadline), James Marsden praised his comic-accurate Cyclops costume in Avengers: Doomsday.

The first movies, we were just in black leather… they were very tight, very restrictive. We couldn’t move.  Hugh [Jackman] and I had to jump over a little retaining wall outside the Statue of Liberty, and we both were tripping over it.

To put this on felt very cool…felt very proud.

The Mummy 4

In a recent interview with Inverse, The Mummy 4 co-director Tyler Gillett stated he hopes to push the limits of a PG-13 rating with The Mummy 4.

But I think we’re going to try to push that. We’re going to find the edge, and I’m sure we’ll step over the line and then we’ll be told to walk it back. But, I mean, we will take risks. We can tell you that we are going to take some risks with that project in some really fun ways.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy

That said, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy has been rated “R” for “strong disturbing violent content, gore, language and brief drug use.” [Bloody-Disgsuting]

Victorian Psycho

Bloody-Disgusting also has word Victorian Psycho is now scheduled for a September 25 theatrical release through Bleeker Street.

Itch!

A mysterious outbreak causes the infected to violently scratch off their own skin in the trailer for Itch!

Forgotten Island

A pair of high school seniors “stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to the fantastical island of Nakali, packed with magical and mythological creatures they grew up hearing stories about from their Filipino families” in the trailer for Dreamworks’ latest animated movie, Forgotten Island.

The X-Files

During her recent appearance at Awesome Con (via Deadline), Gillian Anderson stated the pilot script for the X-Files reboot is “really good” and should be “fucking cool.”

The pilot script is really good. I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance because it’s gonna be f***ing cool. It’s something different. It’s different, and it’s special, so give it a break.

House of the Dragon

Deadline reports Pixomondo, Sony’s VFX operation responsible for House of the Dragon, plans to shut down immediately “after the completion of any outstanding projects or contracts.”

Rooster Fighter

Finally, Adult Swim has released a clip from this week’s new episode of Rooster Fighter.
