For those keeping score at home: Wonder Man season two is cancelled, and the Blade movie is definitely not happening with Mahershala Ali. Now DC has some bummer news to add to Marvel’s tally of misery, with writer David Jenkins (creator of the cult-beloved Our Flag Means Death) confirming the Booster Gold series he’s been working on for at least a year is no longer happening.
“My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward,” Jenkins wrote on Threads. He pointed to Ali’s recent comments regarding “moving on” from Blade, noting, “Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”
A Booster Gold series has been percolating since at least January 2023, when then-DC newcomers James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their planned slate. As part of their big announcement, they revealed a bunch of movies, including Superman (back when it was still titled Superman: Legacy) and Supergirl (then Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow); and TV shows, including the animated Creature Commandos, which arrived in 2024, and Lanterns, which arrives this August.
Booster Gold was among those prospective projects—and there are a lot still in the ether, including Andy Muschietti’s much-anticipated Batman entry, The Brave and the Bold, and that on-again, off-again Sgt. Rock movie. As Variety points out, “This past April, Gunn had said that The Authority [movie] was no longer in the works but added that Booster Gold remained in development and [the Themyscira-set TV show] Paradise Lost was in ‘extreme development.’”
It’s also worth noting Gunn and company have added to the list along the way. The Clayface movie arrives in October, and John Cena’s Peacemaker show wrapped up in 2025. DC also has its “Elseworlds” arena, which has The Batman Part II coming in 2028.
But among the titles on the “in the works” list, Booster Gold seemed to be chugging along. Bringing aboard Jenkins to write and potentially showrun seemed like a positive step forward. Whether the show might revive with a new creative team or is done forever has yet to be seen. DC Studios had no comment for Variety, but we’ll be keeping an eye on Gunn’s oft-updated social media to see if he offers any insights.
Update, July 31, 5:25 p.m.: As we suspected, Booster Gold may still be in play, just without Jenkins aboard. TheWrap writes, “The series will still move forward at DC Studios with a new creative team, TheWrap has learned. An actor has still not been cast for the project.”
