The rumors are becoming a reality. Earlier this summer, actor Ryan Hurst tore his bicep on the set of God of War, in which he played the lead role of Kratos. The production made the hard decision to recast the role and one of the names that quickly floated around was almost a dream: Dave Bautista. Who better than Dave Bautista to play freaking Kratos? Well, after several weeks, it’s happening. Dave Bautista will play Kratos in Prime Video’s video game adaptation God of War.

Variety broke the news of the casting. Production on the show will start again in the next few weeks. All scenes with Hurst are being reshot and the first two seasons of the show are being shot back-to-back.

Clearly, this is not the ideal situation for anyone involved, but in the long run, it might be a good thing. Zero disrespect to Hurst, who gave a legendary performance in Remember the Titans and played a legend himself as Mentor in The Odyssey, but Dave Bautista is a much bigger name. Will he be a better Kratos? That remains to be seen. But him being a part of the show will bring in more eyeballs for sure, and he doesn’t have to train for years to get the proper physique. He just has it.

The God of War show, which is being showrun by none other than Battlestar Galactica legend Ronald D. Moore, will follow the storyline of the franchise’s most recent PlayStation games, in which Kratos trains his son Atreus (Callum Vinson) in the ways of being a God. “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye,” the official description reads. “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

No word on when God of War will be ready for our eyeballs but 2028 seems like a safe bet. Are you excited that Bautista has taken over the role?
