Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died on Friday. He was 54 years old.
In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Brendon’s family revealed he passed in his sleep from “natural causes.” In 2023, he disclosed surviving a heart attack and being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Prior to that, he’d been known to have several spinal surgeries due to his cauda equina syndrome.
Born April 12, 1971, Nicholas Brendon left his dreams of being a basketball player behind to pursue acting to help manage his stuttering. He auditioned for Buffy after figuring out Xander was based partially on creator Joss Whedon’s high school experiences and became a fan favorite. As one of Buffy’s best friends, he appears in all but one episode, and was nominated for three Saturn Awards during the show’s run. After it ended, he was involved in several Xander-focused comics and remained active with the Buffy community.

He also appeared in the shows Kitchen Confidential, Criminal Minds, and Private Practice. Throughout the 2010s, Brendon had multiple arrests and convictions, which his family acknowledged. According to them, he’d been undergoing treatment and medication prior to his passing and was “optimistic about the future … In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art.”
“Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create,” his family continued. “[We] ask for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
Some Buffy alums have commented on his passing, with Alyson Hannigan (who played Willow) thanking Brendon “for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you.” On her Instagram Stories, Anya actor Emma Caulfield wrote: “Rest, Nicky. My heart is heavy, I can’t put into words just yet how this has hit me. I love you.”
“Very sorry to hear about Nicky Brendon,” wrote Jane Espenson, a former writer on the show. “Dawn and Xander both gone?! Doesn’t seem possible.” Brendon is the second Buffy actor to pass away, preceded by Michelle Trachtenberg in 2025.
And finally, from Buffy lead Sarah Michelle Gellar: “‘They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me.’ I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
