Brand New Day’ Is Already a Pretty Big Hit

The people have spoken, and they like Spider-Man movies—especially Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the new film opened to $355 million in North America, nearly double its tracking of $180 million-$190 million. It’s the second-biggest domestic launch ever behind Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million from 2019. Combined with $572 million from overseas, Brand New Day has made $927 million worldwide. That makes it the second-biggest launch worldwide, similarly behind Endgame’s $1.2 billion open. (Throw in The Odyssey, which also stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal and added $51 million domestic for week three, and you get North America’s biggest collective box office ever at $430 million.)

Several superhero movies of 2025 and early 2026 underperformed at the box office, leading many to wonder if they were out of fashion. The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day says otherwise; beyond the hero just being popular, it helps that it’s been a long time since we’ve seen Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. “The audience is very, very connected with this [Peter],” Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman told THR. “And it’s a very relatable story. No matter how old or young you are, everybody wants connection in the world. Everybody needs friends — and that’s what the movie is about.”

With strong reviews and audience reception, Brand New Day will easily cross $1 billion by next weekend. The question is how far it’ll go—Spider-Man: No Way Home ended its theatrical run at nearly $2 billion. Having three Spider-Men (and their villains) on hand helped a lot, ditto positioning itself as worth seeing mid-COVID during the holidays. (Sony was even so high off its success, it thought the film deserved an Oscar.) Brand New Day’s got its own things going for it, but this has been a busy movie year, so jury’s out on how it’ll perform. Even if it doesn’t surpass Home, though, it’s clear that Holland’s Spidey has plenty of gas in the spider-tank.
