According to a new code review by Android Authority, Google is working on a new screen mode for Android 16 that could expand split-screen multitasking to include up to three apps on tablets.
The different parts of the tablet’s screen can then be used to run three different apps side by side for improved productivity. The feature seems to be exclusive to Android tablets, which may be because it needs a larger screen to be useful.
Android Authority notes that Google seems to have been inspired by OnePlus’ multitasking feature Open Canvas. The feature was released in conjunction with the company’s OnePlus Open foldable in 2023 and allows three apps to run simultaneously alongside each other.
Android 16 is expected to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2025.
