Andor Season 2 Continues Time-Honored Tradition of Hijacking the Empire’s Ships

As anticipation builds for Andor season 2‘s debut on Disney+, the official Star Wars YouTube account has unveiled a new first-look clip to keep fans satiated. And wouldn’t you know it, Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor is continuing a time-honored rebel tradition: commandeering one of the Empire’s ships from right under their noses.

In the barely minute-long clip, a swarm of stormtroopers rush toward a hangar bay—only to be greeted by the chaotic sight of a TIE fighter clumsily colliding into walls. Their collective befuddlement quickly turns to alarm as they train their blasters on the ship’s cockpit, where a very flustered Cassian Andor shouts “no” in panic as he desperately tries to regain control of his less-than-smooth getaway.

After taking a beat as stormtroopers’ tracer fire ricochets off the TIE fighter, Andor makes the novel decision to grip the weapon controls and unleash a relentless barrage of missiles onto the unsuspecting stormtroopers, who honestly never stood a chance. But his troubles are far from over, because a heavily armored range trooper looms ahead of him, blocking his escape route. A game of chicken follows as the two train their sights on each other. Just as Andor narrowly evades a rocket, prompting the range trooper to reload his launcher with all the deliberate urgency of a Civil War soldier preparing his musket, he suffers performance issues of his own: the TIE fighter isn’t shooting its massive green rocket at the very exposed range trooper. I hear it happens to everyone. The clip concludes before we can see who prevails, reminding viewers to tune into the show next week to see how their turn-based battle will unfold.

Considering the show’s hectic season finale, which saw Andor decide to press on with his relentless, Moby Dick-like pursuit of dismantling the Empire alongside Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael, it’s clear their once-unwitting partnership has evolved into something far more ambitious. However, as the Star Wars video description aptly notes, Andor’s daring TIE fighter heist “could’ve gone smoother.” If the above clip is any indication, Andor is poised to deliver a thrilling return to form for the beloved Star Wars show, raising the stakes to even grander heights than its inaugural season as it dovetails into Rogue One.

In io9’s review for Andor season 1 way back in 2022, we called the Star Wars spin-off a solid spy thriller: “Every character has substance to their motivations, and [series creator Tony] Gilroy gives us the most relevant and revolutionary Star Wars story to date by exploring a tale of ordinary people beginning to take their power back—and centering that spirit of rebellion around Cassian Andor himself.”

The three-episode premiere of Andor season 2 releases on Disney+ on April 22 at 9 p.m. ET.
