While movie theaters are thriving—what with all the vampires, chicken jockeys, and revival hits—sometimes it’s all too tempting to stay home and see what’s new on Netflix. The streamer recently unveiled its summer movie slate, and we’ve picked out the sci-fi, fantasy, and horror titles to add to your “to-watch” calendar.
May 23 – Fear Street: Prom Queen
Thought Fear Street was just a trilogy? Hope you saved a dance for this new installment, which returns to Shadyside High circa 1988 for more mean girls, misfits, and mysterious disappearances. Matt Palmer directs and the cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, Chris Klein, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, and Ariana Greenblatt, with Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterston.
June 20 – KPop Demon Hunters
Billed as an “animated action comedy,” this Sony Pictures Animation project follows a trio of K-pop superstars who—despite their fame and presumably hectic performance schedule—are secretly also demon hunters, as the title suggests. Things get complicated when they must protect their devoted fans from a boy band whose adorable members are actually monsters.
The directors are Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and the voice cast includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, and Liza Koshy—plus Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Byung Hun Lee.
July 2 – The Old Guard 2
We’d almost forgotten this sequel was coming, but the 2020 original was a lot of fun, so we’ll forgive the excruciatingly long gap between installments. Victoria Mahoney directs a killer cast (Charlize Theron, Henry Golding, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Uma Thurman, and more) in a tale again inspired by the Greg Rucka-Leandro Fernández comic books. This time around, the immortal warriors (except for Theron’s character, Andy, who’s newly mortal) are still in protect-the-world mode, but there are some new complications, including old foes returning and a mystery that could crack the secret of eternal life. Plus, lots and lots of ass-kicking action.
July 10 – Brick
Less flashy than immortal warriors, but no less intriguing: Brick (not the 2005 Rian Johnson neo-noir movie) follows an ordinary couple who wakes up one day to find that they, and all their neighbors who share the same apartment building, are trapped behind a mysterious wall. The obvious next questions: who put it there, why is it there, and is there any hope of escape?
August 13 – Fixed
This adult animated comedy from Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Primal) follows a dog who decides to have one last crazy night with his buddies before he gets neutered. It sounds very silly and the voice cast of comedy heavy-hitters seems up to the task: Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, Beck Bennett, Michelle Buteau, and River Gallo.
Summer TBD – Lost in Starlight
Netflix’s first-ever Korean-language animated film is a romance about an astronaut and a musician who decide to keep their love alive, despite one being on Earth and the other on Mars.
You can read about all the movies coming to Netflix this summer, including non-genre titles, at Tudum.
