Across two seasons, the Fifteenth Doctor got just 16 episodes of Doctor Who, plus two Christmas specials, and his era ended with a confusing regeneration and some intense uncertainty over what will come next for the long-running sci-fi series. You won’t get any concrete answers from its most recent showrunner, Russell T Davis—and the outgoing Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, is also proving to be similarly unhelpful.

Granted, it’s likely Gatwa is past the point of having much insider info; he finished his time on the show and has moved on to the next stage of his career. It happens to actors who become associated with certain characters all the time, even the Doctor.

And according to the Radio Times, citing an interview Gatwa did on British radio show Today, the star doesn’t have anything to share about the next Doctor’s identity. His series ended with Billie Piper, who famously played past Companion Rose Tyler, emerging from the regeneration process—but as fans noticed, Piper didn’t get an end-credits designation saying she was playing the Doctor, as is the tradition.

Here’s what Gatwa said about it: “I’ve finished playing Doctor Who, we all saw the gold sparkle—or did we, I don’t know? I just don’t know who the next Doctor Who is, but it’s certainly not me.”

Putting aside the fact that he called the character “Doctor Who,” which is not the tradition, Gatwa sounds quite convincing about not knowing what comes next. That puts him in the same boat as all us regular fans.

So far all that’s known about the future of Doctor Who on TV is as follows: a spin-off series, The War Between the Land and Sea, is coming soon, and the BBC might make an animated version of the show aimed at preschoolers. For now, let the speculation continue.
