Alex Kurtzman Believes ‘Star Trek’ Still Has a Future on TV

The newest Star Trek series, Starfleet Academy, wrapped up its first season this week. It has a second season on the way, and fans will also get a fourth and fifth season of Strange New Worlds, though it will end its run after that. And then, that’s… it for Star Trek on TV, at least as far as we know, as the franchise looks to pivot back to the big screen.

There’s also the not-so-small matter of Star Trek‘s parent company, Paramount, taking ownership of Warner Bros—on the heels of Paramount’s mega-merger with Skydance last year. According to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, if the deal goes through, Paramount+ and HBO Max will become one streaming platform.

What either of those looming factors will mean for Star Trek‘s small-screen future remains uncertain. But Alex Kurtzman, the current architect of Trek TV programming, had some (vaguely) optimistic things to say recently to TrekMovie.

“I’ve had conversations with [the company] about the future of Star Trek,” Kurtzman said. “Yes, we’ve gotten nothing but support. Yes, there have been specific shows that have been discussed. And we’ll see. I’m truly at the beginning of the conversation with them now. And so I hesitate to say anything to you, because I don’t have anything to report yet. But I can report that the conversations are happening.”

He’s also aware that there’s a lot going on at Paramount Skydance lately, given the circumstances. “They are in the middle of—it’s not just drinking from one firehose; there’s probably 10,000 hoses. And so everything is just happening slower as a result of this massive time of transition. And that is not exclusive to Star Trek. That’s across the board. And at the same time, they’re moving as quickly as they can and should, because they want to be thoughtful and methodical.”

So no updates yet (and certainly nothing solid on, say, the potential Star Trek: Year One series)—but maybe soon?
