Alan Tudyk Says Even Scenes Cut From ‘Andor’ Season 2 Made the Show Better

Fans of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had long anticipated K-2SO‘s arrival on Andor. Considering the hulking droid voiced by Alan Tudyk plays a huge part in the movie, the Disney+ show was duty-bound to explain how he first crosses paths with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna). However, as it turned out, K-2SO’s role in the series wasn’t as expansive as some might’ve predicted.

There’s a practical reason for that; as Andor creator Tony Gilroy explained back in April, bringing in such a physically conspicuous character proved challenging in a story so wrapped up in the business of spies and sneaking around. The end result was that Andor featured an impactful yet limited on-screen presence for K-2SO.

As Collider reports, drawing from a panel it hosted at FanExpo Denver, Tudyk—a genre fan favorite not just for Rogue One, but also for Firefly, Resident Alien, and more—totally understood why that had to be. Andor just didn’t have room in its fast-paced second season.

But with a lot of story to tell across a limited array of episodes, Tudyk said, “you missed a big chunk of us getting to know each other.”

Certain scenes might not have made it into the Disney+ series, but the actor explained he was still able to draw on what they might have contained to help inspire his performance.

“A lot of the things I had in my mind about Cassian and K-2 are in that blank space that we don’t get to see, and that’s how they get to care about one another,” Tudyk explained. “That’s how we thought about it.”

At any rate, we get to see the trust and affection that’s been built up between the duo throughout Rogue One. With their Andor interactions providing a bit of the backstory, we can fill in that “blank space” where their relationship really took shape, just as Tudyk did.
