A new Galaxy Ring rival is here, but no one was expecting this

After many years of hiatus, and to much surprise, Acer has returned to the wearable tech market with a Samsung Galaxy Ring and Oura Ring 4 rival.

The Acer FreeSense Ring was a surprise announcement at Computex 2025, a tech show in Taipei typically focused on laptops and PC gear. Wearable tech like this normally gets leaked in advance, but not in this case.

As you might expect, the FreeSense Ring is similar to other smart rings on the market, designed to be worn on your finger or thumb with biometric sensors on the inside.

The ‘sophisticated’ design is made from an ultra-lightweight titanium alloy, which will come in glossy black or matte rose gold finishes and seven sizes (7-13).

It’s also IP68/5ATM dust and water resistant, 2.6mm thick and weighs 2-3g depending on the size.

Importantly, when compared to the Oura Ring 4, there’s no subscription fee to pay. And compared to the rest of the market, including the Samsung Galaxy Ring, the FreeSense Ring is one of the cheapest smart rings at $199-250.

Acer

That’s according to Tom’s Guide, which says it will be released in August.

Using its array of sensors, the Acer FreeSense Ring can track things like your heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen levels and sleep.

As you might expect for a gadget like this, there’s AI involved, where the companion app will suggest wellness insights and suggestions based on the data gathered.

“With features such as sleep stage analysis and continuous tracking, the Acer FreeSense Ring helps encourage proactive health management and lifestyle awareness,” said Acer.

The big question is whether the FreeSense Ring can do a good enough job of its data gathering and processing compared to key rivals while lasting long enough. It’s rated at four days, which is behind the pace.

Acer might also have some tricks up its sleeve in terms of the FreeSense Ring working with its other devices, like laptops. Some neat gestures would be an interesting lure.

The last Acer wearable we saw was the Liquid Leap+, which appeared at MWC 2015! I’m still hoping for a Google Pixel smart ring.
