At least 20 people have gotten sick and four people have died from a listeria outbreak tied to pre-cooked pasta meals sold at Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and a number of other grocery retailers, according to a notice published online by the CDC.
The CDC has identified illnesses tied to the listeria outbreak in 15 states, with the highest concentration in Texas, Michigan, Louisiana, and California. Listeria is most likely to impact pregnant women, newborns, those 65+, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.
The listeria outbreak has been tied to Nate’s Fine Foods, according to the FDA, which is a supplier to FreshRealm. Those companies don’t sell pasta products under their own name directly to consumers. Instead, the prepared pasta products are given custom names by the retailers, like Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) first identified the outbreak strain in routine testing of a chicken fettuccine alfredo sample at a FreshRealm establishment in March 2025. The agency identified people who got sick from August 2024 to May 2025, and a recall was first issued in June 2025. The recall has since been expanded.
